So i’m sitting twiddling my fingers wondering what I could be doing while my lady is in bed resting over the weekend. After looking at the normal websites and chatting on the cam sites that I frequent I decided to re-emulate my computer. Being the Mac junkie I am, I decided that I want my Windows to look if not just like it, as close as I could get to a Mac. There will never be a exact copy, I understand this. But I really like the Macintosh interface, with the aqua dock and the great brush look of iTunes and Quicktime.
After doing some browsing I found some sites that have themes that you can download for WindowsBlinds that make the top of your windows look just like a Mac. The color buttons are on the left on a mac and on the right in windows. Well that is what this program does, along with changing the colors of the windows. Package that with ObjectBar from the same software people and you have a Mac looking Pc. Right? wrong. I still needed a dock. Well being that I am getting all the software from Stardock I decided to try their ObjectDock. This is a great dock. It has a task manager with screenshots for minimized buttons and all. But, there is always a but, ObjectBar puts a ugly icon in ObjectDock that you cannot remove or change.
After Pulling out all of my lovely locks trying to get rid of that damn ugly icon from ObjectBar I had a vision. This vision was first seen a few months back on my favorite geek TV show The Screensavers on TechTV. This vision was to change the shells windows uses to display what it displays. Now we all know Explorer is the default shell for windows. It’s a good one also, kinda slow, kinda buggy, mine crashes once in a while but not since I went to XP. So after looking a few different ones(yes there are a bunch) I decided on two. The first one I decided on was Talisman. This is a really cool shell. Instead of having only one surface to draw on, it has many. This is the shell you want if your only going to use your computer for normal computer stuff. Although it costs roughly 25 bucks I feel this is kinda pricy for what it does. I probably wont buy it. The Second one I tried is Litestep. This shell is the one that was featured on TechTV. It is very nice, it goes in easy and it comes out easy. There are many themes you can download or you can make your own. Unlike Talisman, Litestep is free.(I love that word, free) although this shell is more cryptic. It reminds me of Linux. In fact if I had to describe it, I would call it Linux shell for the windows operating system. This is not the shell for the person not wanting to learn something new. It is almost requires you to learn the syntax of the configuration files.
After installing Litestep I noticed a big preformance increase in my computer. Without having explorer take lots of resources my computer can now use its power for more important things. Like stealing music from Metallica!
